Cornelius Karlens Dekop Appointed as Governor of the Bank of Botswana

In accordance with the powers vested in him by Section 112 of the Constitution of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Dr. Mokweetsi E.K. Masisi, the President of the Republic of Botswana, has appointed Mr. Cornelius Karlens Dekop as the Governor of the Bank of Botswana, effective from October 23, 2023. Mr. Dekop, a distinguished professional with a Master of Arts degree in Development Economics from William College, United States, brings with him over 28 years of experience in the Botswana civil service and the African Development Bank. His career has been marked by expertise in the management of public finances and budgetary matters. Notable highlights from Mr. Dekop's career include his role as the former Executive Director, Southern Africa Group I Constituency, African Development Bank, from August 2019 to July 2022. He also served as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology, and Energy from April 2018 to May 2019. Between August 2011 and March 2018, he held the position of Secretary for Development and Budget in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. Furthermore, Mr. Dekop has made significant contributions in various board capacities. He has held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Diamond Trading Company Botswana and served as a Director on the Boards of DEBSWANA and De Beers Group. The appointment of Mr. Cornelius Karlens Dekop as Governor of the Bank of Botswana is expected to bring a wealth of experience and expertise to this critical role in the country's financial and economic landscape.

Bathoen Statue Unveiled

The statue of the great Kgosi Bathoen II was unveiled prematurely recently due to lack of funds to complete a planned project at the site. According to the curator of Kgosi Bathoen II (BKII) Museum, Mika Morima, the unveiling of the statue had to be done because it was 'high timee'. “We wanted to give the community the opportunity to see him,” he said. Morima said they had experienced difficulties obtaining money and that they still owed the creator of the statue, Masilonyana Radinoga. He however said that they were calling for sponsors to come forth through the 'Adopt a Monument' strategy, whereby companies could advertise themselves at the site and in turn take care of of the site and develop it. “We also encourage the community to help. Red Cross donate as Ramaphatle celebrates village status and new chief

Botswana Red Cross volunteers are here in Ramaphatle to donate second hand clothes they collected from Gaborone West Phase 4 residents to the poor. The villagers, however have two more reasons to celebrate; Ramaphatle was recently declared a village and for the first time in the history of the settlement, they will have their own chief, one of their own. “This is the beginning,” says Kgosi Letlole Thobega of Mmankgodi. He is giving a welcome speech at the village’s kgotla. “The government now recognizes Ramaphatle as a village and that means we will have developments.
