A scuffle ensued at Palapye kgotla this morning when a greedy but cowardly thief refused to take his chosen punishment; six strokes on the bare buttocks.
After successfully stealing a pair of trousers, socks and gloves from CB store without getting caught Mpho Kabelo Keletso, 22 said he got tempted to steal some trainers from Pep for his girlfriend but his luck ran out. When they searched him they also found the spoils from the first crime.
"Were you not satisfied with the clothes you had stolen from CB?" Kgosi Michael Maforaga quizzed the thief who replied; "I wanted to pick something for my girlfriend too." To avoid going to jail for a minimum of three years, Keletso pleaded with the chief to give him six lashes instead.
Looking at the cane that was about to crack on his buttocks, suddenly decided jail was better and asked to see the chief again. He claimed his behind was still sore from the five strokes he got from Pep before they called the police. Maforaga reasoned with the young man to take the cane and he agreed and came looking more confident.
When he got to the door of the punishment room he became hesitant then refused to enter. The rest is in the video
